Ways Roofs Can Become Damaged
A very common cause of roof damage is an impact from some kind of object, whether it’s a tree branch blown off in the wind or large chunks of hail or ice hitting the surface of the roof. If you suspect you have a leak, it’s best to have it checked out right away, especially if the weather is cold and any escaping heat could raise your utility bill.
When there are high winds blowing off shingles and roofing tiles, they may cause weak points in the roof. This easily allows water to get in which can cause damage to ceiling, walls, and roof decking, especially if the flashing is damaged.
Skylights are another area of concern for damage and leaks. Although they look wonderful and allow plenty of light in, a poorly installed skylight can also allow water in. Also, as the rubber seals around them degrade due to UV light and repeated exposure to high and low temperatures, they gradually start to leak, necessitating repairs.
Even if there were only a few lifted shingles, it can create problems that result in roof leaks, so it’s a great idea to get your roof inspected every year to catch problems before they become major issues.
